Constant

I walked out of work a few nights ago and looked up, the stars were shining so brightly, they took my breath away.  I love the night sky when the air is cold and clear.  Usually by work, the glow is muted because of all the light pollution in the crowded area of Garden City, but for some reason this night the sky sparkled.  I felt God's Presence.

Constant.  That is our God.  Everlasting.  That is our God.  Unchanging.  That is our God.  In the darkness of a pandemic or in the crazy roller coaster of  daily life, our Lord doesn't change.  He always loves, always understands, always cares for us.  His hold on us does not lessen, His love for us does not fail.  Like the stars, we may see Him differently at times, or sometimes not at all...but His heart remains the same and He is there behind the clouds.   Whether I or my loved ones stay well or get sick, I know His hands will not let me or them go.  Increase our faith through this Lord!

Lord, You know the terror and sadness gripping the world today.  We hear new reports, more getting sick.  It's hard for us to focus on the good, those getting well, and there are many, many people getting well.  The media only puts the worst in front of us.  They don't put those helping.  They don't put those healing.  And they certainly don't put out the fact that You are in control and Your love sustains us.  But those two things are more true than anything else we can see.  We are scared.  We are unsure.  And some of us are sick.  Lord, help us to remember Your love.  Help us to see Your Presence and tender care in all of this.  Help us to share that with others.  And Lord, yes, bring us a cure, bring an end to this illness. Lord, comfort and sustain those who are sick.  Bring healing to their bodies, peace to their hearts.  Let them sense Your Presence and Your care.  Let Your children be shining lights, like the stars in these dark times, sharing Your love, peace and kindness.  Lord, help us.  We trust You.  No matter what happens, it is well with our souls, because You keep us for eternity.

Hebrews 13:8  Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

James 1:17  Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.

There is Light

The warm weather is starting to make an appearance.  When the sun is out here there are days I can leave the house with just a light jacket. The birds are flitting here and there taking care of their spring time business.  Flowers are poking their heads from the ground, looking for that first bit of springtime warmth and sun. Insects are buzzing around.   I see the forsythia blossoming on the parkways, falling across the greening grass with yellow colored abandon.  It's encouraging.  It's heart lifting.

Right now, it feels like we are in a dismal winter landscape.  Since I live in downstate New York, all we hear about is the latest numbers of the COVID 19 virus, what's being done, what's not being done...on and on.  Being in one of the hardest hit areas can take it's toll.  But I listen to the sounds of spring.  I watch the birds, and feel the warming air. Flowers, and yes, even and especially, the weeds are making an appearance.  I see all the gardening supplies piling up at the home improvement stores and I feel hope.  Spring reminds us hope is alive.

Even when all around us is shrouded in gloom and worry, we are given a sign by the Lord of hope.  Spring's renewal.  This is what we need to hang onto.  Hope.

I know the hope that is Jesus Christ.  I imagine on that saddest of days, Good Friday, when our Savior hung on the cross, bleeding and broken, death finally claiming His battered body, the apostles and His followers felt completely lost and helpless....but the Resurrection was coming.  Unbeknownst to them hope would arise.  Hope WILL arise.

Psalm 30:5  For His anger is but for a moment, His favor is for life; Weeping may endure for a night, But joy comes in the morning.

Jesus Himself gave us this lesson when He spoke of God's care of birds and lilies.   Matthew 6:25-31  25 “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27 Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?

28 “So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; 29 and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?

31 “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

So if your mind gets to worrying over the turmoil going on, look to the birds and see our Father's care.  Let it calm your heart, knowing that His love for us is beyond imagining, that we mean so much more to Him than the birds of the air.  His love is perfect and His plans are right.

Lord, calm our fears.  We look to You to carry us through this time.  Keep us and our loved ones safe.  We know You are in control.  You have the best in store for us.  Let us keep looking to You for our care.  We know that we don't always get carried around trouble, but You will always carry us through whatever trials we face.  Thank You.  Plant Your hope deep within our hearts.  In Jesus Name.  Amen.

Look Up

I recently mentioned that we were doing a Easter devotion series called "It Is Finished."  A couple of weeks before this whole lock down, quarantine COVID 19 craziness started there was an entry entitled "Promised Presence."   This day's devotional was based on the words Jesus spoke on the cross, "My God, why have you forsaken Me."    The reading goes on to explain that because Jesus was forsaken we will never be.  I want to share the exercise the devotion gave for that day, because I believe more than ever we need to remind ourselves to look up.  The idea was to list your fears, your the things that make you anxious, things that caused pain and after each one, write Deuteronomy 31:6  He will not leave you or forsake you.

For example:  (and this is from my list)

Retirement.  He will not leave me or forsake me.
Moving.  He will not leave me or forsake me.
Anger/Sin.  He will not leave me or forsake me.
Changing.  He will not leave me or forsake me.

Whatever you fill that first part in with, the answer is always the same.  He will not leave you or forsake you.  Isaiah 54:8  In a burst of anger I turned my face away for a little while. But with everlasting love I will have compassion on you,” says the Lord, your Redeemer.  God's love is forever.  His care and compassion unending.  The world may be feeling His anger (but yet He longs to cradle them in His heart), but His children can rest in the everlasting arms of our Lord.

Lord, let us look up.  When we look around, listen to the world's heralds all we see is chaos, all we hear is doom and gloom...But when we look at You we see a refuge.  When we keep our eyes fixed on You and use our faith we are strengthened and remain at peace.  I ask that You destroy this virus.  I thank You for the good I see all around me, people helping one another and caring for one another.  Let Your church lead the way in this.  Thank You that You will never, in no way, ever forsake Your children.  Use this time to draw people to Yourself.   We are beyond blessed that whatever happens, You are always by our sides.  Focus our hearts today on that fact.  Strengthen those whose faith is wavering.  Give us God visits!  We need to see Your hand!  Lord, please help those who are sick to get well, bring healing.  Please keep those safe from harm who are still working, helping others and doing what needs to be done.  Give our leaders wisdom, Your wisdom and let them turn to You at this time.  You are the God of all answers.  The one true way.  In Jesus Name.  Amen.

He Remains In Control

The Lord is in control.  Believe!  I just want to spend some time praying together today, lifting up our communities. Lord, let Your love prevail.  Let Your wisdom lead the day.  Let people's hearts be turned to You, and let Your church lead the way.  This virus has claimed lives, changed lives, and caused so much fear.  Lord, destroy this virus and restore people's lives...not the way they were, but better, because they have come to know You as Lord and Savior through the trials and storms.  Lord, we know You are bigger than anything in the universe, You contain he universe.  Your children need not fear.  But we do feel fear, we do feel sadness.  Be our strength and our comfort.  Be our peace and our high tower.  Lord, let us be Your hands and feet that share Your love, care, goodness and heart with those around us.  I pray that You end this virus in such a way that the world sees Your hand and Your hand alone.  Please comfort those who have lost loved ones.  Wrap them in Your arms and soothe their hearts.  Please help those who are not being paid to have their needs met.  Please let us be the ones to help meet needs when we can, giving You the glory.  Lord, once again, we see how much the world needs You.  Please stop the craziness and let Your love shine through every day.  We pray this in Jesus' powerful Name.  Amen

It is Well

The world has gone crazy.  Fear seems to be ruling the day.  I have to say even for myself, initially I was getting very fearful.  Not so much of COVID19, but of people's reactions and the behavior I as seeing, the hoarding, people being afraid to go out in public, arguments over toilet paper or paper towels.  Like I said, crazy.   I still fear for people's livelihoods, the small business that can't survive something of this magnitude, the people who will not be paid when their jobs shut down.  My heart is breaking for them.  Will they be ok?  And then God....Zephaniah 3:17 For the Lord your God is living among you. He is a mighty savior. He will take delight in you with gladness. With his love, he will calm all your fears. He will rejoice over you with joyful songs.”

In spite of what is going on, God is still in control.  And He has brought us through these times before.  Things may change, for some a lot, but whoever trusts in Him will have peace and be taken care of in the way God knows is best.  Isaiah 55:8  “My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine.

So today, I'd like to just encourage God's children to remember who holds them in His arms.  To know that God loves and will not forsake.  I want to pray for comfort, for healing, for wholeness, for rest, and for peace.  These days are evil, but the one Who holds us is always good.

Please join me in prayer each day for an end to this virus.  2 Chronicles 7:14  Then if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land.

Remember, we serve a great God...bigger than anything or anyone.  Let His light shine in us in these dark days.  Matthew 5:16 In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.

Lord thank You for caring for us, even when all around us is falling apart and going crazy.  We, Your children know that You will never leave us nor forsake us.  Help us to be the light and to be Your hands as we navigate this time of upheaval and distress.  Let us show Your love and Your kindness.  In Jesus Name.  Amen.

Be a blessing.  Whether you help others or let others help you...you are a blessing.

Question Time

Every Lenten/Easter season our church follows a devotional designed to focus our thoughts and hearts on the Lord Jesus and His gift of salvation in specific way.  This year our focus is on the Last Words of Christ.

One of the readings was from Luke 2:25-35.  It spoke about Simeon looking not at a future political ruler when he gazed at the infant Jesus, but at the Salvation of the nations.  He saw past the worldly needs of freedom from tyranny to the eternal need of salvation and freedom from sin and death.  I don't know if Simeon understood completely all the implications of this tiny child, but He did know that Jesus would bring salvation, cause many in Israel to fall, give joy to others and Mary herself would be pierced through the heart to see her Son's suffering.

So in looking at Simeon, one of those God questions came to my mind, "Am I looking for my Savior to show up?"  As I go about my daily grind am I looking for Jesus to show up in my day?  Maybe we should go even further with this question.  Am I looking for the final, triumphant return of my Savior?  Well there's a second question.  LOL   My Bible says about Simeon, "He was righteous and devout and was EAGERLY waiting for the Messiah to come and rescue Israel."  Luke 2:25  Are we eager for Jesus to show up?  Do we really think He will rescue us?  Are we looking for Him?

I think if we answer "no" to these questions we are missing out on so much hope and peace.  I want to answer "yes," but I know I get caught up in the crazy pace of living and forget to look for Jesus to come and touch my life on a daily basis, and I forget to look to the skies and say, "Is it today Lord?  Are You coming back today?"  It's what God visits are all about really....the Lord coming into our day and making Himself known, His hand reaching out and touching our hearts, our circumstances our lives.  I want to look for those moments and touches!  I want to eagerly await them!

Lord, thank You for the story of Simeon.  It is one of my favorites and it shows me the attitude of expectancy I desire to have.  Put this attitude in all our hearts, help us to not be so caught up in life that we forget to look for You in our day, and keep the hope of Your return in our hearts.  I love the special moments You show up in my day, but sometimes I think we all forget to take notice and we miss out.  Give us clear vision, expectant hearts and Jesus focused minds today!  In His precious Name.  Amen.

Let's start each day with a heart of expectancy, and a prayer to watch for Him.

Luke 2:25-35  25 At that time there was a man in Jerusalem named Simeon. He was righteous and devout and was eagerly waiting for the Messiah to come and rescue Israel. The Holy Spirit was upon him 26 and had revealed to him that he would not die until he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. 27 That day the Spirit led him to the Temple. So when Mary and Joseph came to present the baby Jesus to the Lord as the law required, 28 Simeon was there. He took the child in his arms and praised God, saying,

29 “Sovereign Lord, now let your servant die in peace,
    as you have promised.
30 I have seen your salvation,
31     which you have prepared for all people.
32 He is a light to reveal God to the nations,
and he is the glory of your people Israel!”

33 Jesus’ parents were amazed at what was being said about him. 34 Then Simeon blessed them, and he said to Mary, the baby’s mother, “This child is destined to cause many in Israel to fall, and many others to rise. He has been sent as a sign from God, but many will oppose him. 35 As a result, the deepest thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your very soul.”

Scripture Ah-has

I love reading the Word of God.  There's an old American saying, maybe from a movie, I'm not sure, "There's gold in them thar hills."  Well, I'm going to steal that saying and change it a bit...."There's gold in that thar Book!"   I love when you're reading and something just pops out.  Sometimes it's something so simple you wonder why you didn't see it before.  Sometimes it's a reminder of a truth you already knew, but hadn't thought about in a long time.  Sometimes it's just a new way of seeing a verse that matches up perfectly with the life circumstances we are facing just then.  I guess that's why the Lord tells us in regard to His Word: "For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires."  Hebrews 4:12.  His Word is alive, powerful and active.

So twice this week while I spent time in God's love letter to us I saw something I didn't see before. The first came in James 1:12-15  God blesses those who patiently endure testing and temptation.  Afterward they will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love Him.   And remember, when you are being tempted, do not say,"God is tempting me."  God is never tempted to do wrong, and He never tempts anyone else.  Temptation comes from our own desires, which entice us and drag us away.  These desires give birth to sinful actions.  And when sin is allowed to grow, it gives birth to death.

Well, now wait a minute here.  God doesn't tempt, but He does test?  What's the difference?  This was our discussion at Bible study on Sunday.  Is it the same thing?  How does God test, but not tempt?  God doesn't put sin in our path, does He?  I mean He has no fellowship with sin, right?  Well, as I mulled this over during the next few days, I came up with a simple answer.  We all face testing.  God, life, the Devil...wherever that testing comes from it's something we have to face.  The temptation part comes from in our selves...what choice do we make when facing the test?  Perfect example, my breakfast drink spilled while I was driving on Monday.  I'm not talking a little drops, I'm talking half the drink, spilling over into my new car's console.  That was the test.  Now, the temptation:  how do I react?  The temptation came from within myself  to scream and yell at God...accusing Him, being angry and lashing out.   And I have to say I did a little of that....for about five minutes before I got over it.   So it became simple to me...testing outside, temptation inside.  I don't know if that "religiously" correct, but it works for me.

Second gold nugget came from 1 John 1:5-10  This is the message we heard from Jesus and now declare to you:  God is light, and there is no darkness in Him at all.  So we are lying if we say we have fellowship with God but go on living in spiritual darkness; we are not practicing the truth.  But if we are living in the light, as God  is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, His Son, cleanses us from all sin.  If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth.  But if we confess our sins to Him, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.  If we claim we have not sinned, we are calling God a liar and showing that His Word has no place in our hearts.

Okay, so  all this seemed a bit contradictory to me.  I'm supposed to be living in the light, right?  God is in the light, no darkness, no sin, just perfection...but if I am living in the light, then how can I be as sinful as I am?  How can I claim to live in the light and still fail and fall so often? I mean, I'm a mess! And here is the ah-ha moment...it's not a matter of me being sinless, it's the fact that as I live in God's light, I see my sinfulness, I see my need to confess I see my need of Jesus.  Oh!  Living in the light means I see God's truth and agree with His way of seeing things.  How else would I know to confess sin if I wasn't shown what was right or wrong.  I would be living in spiritual darkness if I didn't see my true self, blemishes, flaws and all.  I'd think I was just fine the way I was, never admitting the truth:  I need a Savior!  I need forgiveness!  Thank God, He shows us our sin and then provides the way to be forgiven and redeemed!  And it's not confession that makes me anymore acceptable to God...I am already accepted in Jesus Christ...but my confession and  my receiving of His forgiveness breaks down the barrier of sin between us, letting us have fellowship with our Father and other believers.

God is so cool!  LOL

Lord, thank You for Your wonderful, glorious, living, breathing Word!  Thank You for all the treasures You've stored there for us to find!  Lord, let Your Word come alive in our hearts and transform our lives!  Give us a deeper love, a deeper understanding....give us more of You!  In Jesus' beautiful Name, amen.

Dig into to the Word today!

Reminders for the Day

I was driving in the car a few days ago and I heard two songs back to back that reminded me who I was and how loved I am.  It was a perfect timing kind of moment... I needed the uplift as I was dragging that morning, feeling a little tired and weary, overburdened and down on myself.  God is so good.  I am sharing these two songs, my God visit of that morning, with you guys because I know I am not the only one who needs the lift that only Jesus can give.  Enjoy!  These songs are speaking to and about you!

Lord, thank You that You love us unconditionally, totally and eternally.  Remind us of this often and remind us who we are in You, especially when we feel so bogged down in worldly concerns, life's turmoil and even our own shortcomings and failures,   I thank You that You give music to us, to lift us up and make our heart smile.  Let Your love come through these songs today to each person reading this.  Remind them that You are rejoicing over them with singing, and that Your love knows no bounds.  In Jesus' loving Name.  Amen.

Rejoice with the Lord today.

Zechariah 3:17  The Lord your God in your midst, The Mighty One, will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing.”

When Jesus Calls

Yesterday we said good bye to a beautiful lady at our church.  Last week this sweet sister went home to be with the Lord, released from her pain and ill health of this life.  She was on this earth for many years and left a legacy of faith, kindness and motherly love for all who knew her.  She will definitely be missed, but we are so happy for her homecoming to heaven.  I am always so blown away by the hope we have for after this time on earth.

Our Pastor spoke on the the story of Lazarus.  He spoke on Jesus being the resurrection and the life, Biblical truths that our dear Georgina believed with all her heart.  Here is Lazarus' story.

11 A man named Lazarus was sick. He lived in Bethany with his sisters, Mary and Martha. 2 This is the Mary who later poured the expensive perfume on the Lord’s feet and wiped them with her hair. Her brother, Lazarus, was sick. 3 So the two sisters sent a message to Jesus telling him, “Lord, your dear friend is very sick.”  4 But when Jesus heard about it he said, “Lazarus’s sickness will not end in death. No, it happened for the glory of God so that the Son of God will receive glory from this.” 5 So although Jesus loved Martha, Mary, and Lazarus, 6 he stayed where he was for the next two days. 7 Finally, he said to his disciples, “Let’s go back to Judea.”  8 But his disciples objected. “Rabbi,” they said, “only a few days ago the people in Judea were trying to stone you. Are you going there again?”
9 Jesus replied, “There are twelve hours of daylight every day. During the day people can walk safely. They can see because they have the light of this world. 10 But at night there is danger of stumbling because they have no light.” 11 Then he said, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but now I will go and wake him up.”  12 The disciples said, “Lord, if he is sleeping, he will soon get better!” 13 They thought Jesus meant Lazarus was simply sleeping, but Jesus meant Lazarus had died.  14 So he told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead. 15 And for your sakes, I’m glad I wasn’t there, for now you will really believe. Come, let’s go see him.”  16 Thomas, nicknamed the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, “Let’s go, too—and die with Jesus.”  17 When Jesus arrived at Bethany, he was told that Lazarus had already been in his grave for four days. 18 Bethany was only a few miles down the road from Jerusalem, 19 and many of the people had come to console Martha and Mary in their loss. 20 When Martha got word that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him. But Mary stayed in the house. 21 Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask.”  23 Jesus told her, “Your brother will rise again.”  24 “Yes,” Martha said, “he will rise when everyone else rises, at the last day.”  25 Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying. 26 Everyone who lives in me and believes in me will never ever die. Do you believe this, Martha?”
27 “Yes, Lord,” she told him. “I have always believed you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who has come into the world from God.” 28 Then she returned to Mary. She called Mary aside from the mourners and told her, “The Teacher is here and wants to see you.” 29 So Mary immediately went to him.  30 Jesus had stayed outside the village, at the place where Martha met him. 31 When the people who were at the house consoling Mary saw her leave so hastily, they assumed she was going to Lazarus’s grave to weep. So they followed her there. 32 When Mary arrived and saw Jesus, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died.”  33 When Jesus saw her weeping and saw the other people wailing with her, a deep anger welled up within him, and he was deeply troubled. 34 “Where have you put him?” he asked them.  They told him, “Lord, come and see.” 35 Then Jesus wept. 36 The people who were standing nearby said, “See how much he loved him!” 37 But some said, “This man healed a blind man. Couldn’t he have kept Lazarus from dying?”  38 Jesus was still angry as he arrived at the tomb, a cave with a stone rolled across its entrance. 39 “Roll the stone aside,” Jesus told them. But Martha, the dead man’s sister, protested, “Lord, he has been dead for four days. The smell will be terrible.”  40 Jesus responded, “Didn’t I tell you that you would see God’s glory if you believe?” 41 So they rolled the stone aside. Then Jesus looked up to heaven and said, “Father, thank you for hearing me. 42 You always hear me, but I said it out loud for the sake of all these people standing here, so that they will believe you sent me.” 43 Then Jesus shouted, “Lazarus, come out!” 44 And the dead man came out, his hands and feet bound in graveclothes, his face wrapped in a headcloth. Jesus told them, “Unwrap him and let him go!”

So I got to thinking about this whole story and the believer's death.  And the Lord spoke something to my heart...for us, this life is like death like the grave, there is sickness, our bodies are dying everyday...but when the time comes for us to join the Lord in heaven, we are called to life by Jesus...we are called to "real" life, eternal life, healthy, whole, amazing, unending, beyond anything we could imagine, life.  He calls us to life when we leave this earth. We will be unwrapped of pain, unwrapped of heartache and sickness, sin and death.   It's as if He calls us from the dark grave of death to the bright joy of eternal life.   Jesus has overcome this world, overcome death and will call us to His side when our time here is done.  What hope we have!  He calls us to life!  Our being born again on this earth, the renewal of our spirit through the gift of salvation Jesus bought for us on the Cross, is just a foretaste of true life we will have in eternity with Him.  It's amazing.  One day we all will hear Him say "Come out!"    It's time to come home.

This life here has it's ups and downs, it's good, it's bad, sometimes easy, other times we feel as if the we can't take another step...but it's not the end.  Like those who have gone before us, we have a home in heaven, waiting for us....a place where we will be truly alive forever with the Lord.

Wow Father, what a wonderful hope we have.  To think, now we live in the darkness of a dying world, but one day You will call us forth to live in eternal life and light....forever by Your side, forever filled with awe and joy.  One day we will hear that final call to life, like Lazarus from the grave.  Help us to live here with that in mind, eternal thinking and to share this truth with others so that they will hear Your call on their hearts now and share in this glorious eternity later.  In Jesus' Name, the only Name that saves.  Amen.

Think about the heaven that awaits us, let it color your day with joy and hope.
