Ready and Alert

1 Peter 1:13  Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at His coming.

This verse opened up the Monday morning devotional I read entitled, "Be Prepared."   This devotional spoke on the necessity of Christians to be "in training" as it were, like an athlete trains for a big race or game.  Coming on the heals of our Sunday morning Bible Study lesson, where the Holy Spirit warned Paul of the suffering that awaited him in Jerusalem, I figure the Lord is trying to tell me to make sure I am ready for whatever is coming.

In Acts 20:22-23 Paul stated:  "And now I am bound by the Spirit to go to Jerusalem.  I don't know what awaits me, except that the Holy Spirit tells me in city after city that jail and suffering lie ahead."   I believe the Holy Spirit was giving Paul the time to prepare himself for what was to come. Whether through prayer, fasting, extra time in God's Presence, we are not given specifics, but Paul needed to be prepared not only to face the suffering that lay ahead, but to willing go forward and not run from it.

We don't know what the future for our lives holds.  We do know that the world is drawing closer and closer to darkness.  We have to be prepared to face all the challenges that we face whether personal or global.  Temptations, trials, difficulties....we will face them.  Jesus told us plainly in John 16:33 "I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”

It's our job to prepare beforehand to face these difficult times.  Matthew 26:41  Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak!”   Jesus spoke these words to Peter, admonishing him to pray instead of sleep so that Peter would be able to withstand temptation.  The same is true for us.  We need to spend time in prayer, in study, in the Lord's presence, and  learning Scripture, in order to be prepared for the battles that lie ahead.  How can we overcome if we give ourselves no foundation to stand on?

Last year, I ran my first and probably only half-marathon.  That's 13 miles of running!  I could not have done that unless I trained, hours and hours of training.  How much more important is spiritual training and preparedness!?!?!

Luke 21:36  Keep alert at all times. And pray that you might be strong enough to escape these coming horrors and stand before the Son of Man.”

Ephesians 6:18  Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.

1 Thessalonians 5:6  So be on your guard, not asleep like the others. Stay alert and be clearheaded.

1 Peter 5:8   Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.

Verse after verse we are told to prepare.  To be alert and watchful.  There is so much to stand against in this world, even in our own sinful natures.  And I want to stand!  I want my Lord to find me faithful when He comes.

None of us know the future, but we can spend time with the Lord now so that we are deeply rooted in Him when temptation or tragedy strike.  And that is what I believe the Lord is saying today.  Take the time now to study and pray.  Don't be a foxhole Christian who only calls on the Lord when trouble arises.  It's so easy to take for granted to quiet times, the easy times.  So easy to get spiritually lazy.   I fall into that pattern myself some days.

Lord, help us to prepare, to take seriously the warnings You give.  Ground us in Your love, in Your holiness, in Your Presence.  Lord, help us to overcome the temptation to be lazy Christians.  Give us a firm foundation so that we can stand true and stand strong through the power of Your Holy Spirit.  The closer we are to You, the more we will overcome.  Give us the ability to shut our the distractions of this world.   Lord, I want to glorify You.  We all want to hear "well done, my good and faithful servant."  Give us the desire to spend the time now in spiritual "training" as it were.    You are so patient with us, so willing to teach and help us grow.  Make us willing to learn and to work with You.  In Jesus strong Name, amen.

Make a plan to set aside the time for "training."

Yesterday I finally got out for some exercise and I was listening to a podcast by Joyce Meyer on forgiving.  Now, I generally feel this is one of my God given strengths, I forgive pretty easily and don't hold grudges.  But knowing I can never have enough teaching on forgiving others, and falling into any sin can easily happen to any of us, I listened with an open heart.

As I jogged along, I dug around in my heart to see if there was unforgiveness lurking in some deep, dark corner....someone or something I had forgotten about...and lo and behold I found that mostly, it's God Himself who I hold the most against....the one who "allows" the bad stuff, the hard stuff, the consequences (doesn't matter if it was my choice that caused the issue, lol).  The one who I feel could change all my junk into treasure but chooses to allow junk to remain junk....treasure to feel non-existent and change to come in inches instead of the miles I would like.  Interesting.

Not ten seconds after I had this thought of unforgiveness toward God, my podcast ended and I checked the verse of the day on my Bible app....Romans 5:1  Therefore, since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us.  Peace with God!  So why do I allow myself to become at odds with Him?  God made peace with me and He can hold a thousand times more against me than I can ever hold against Him!  Jesus died so I could have this beautiful blessing.  Why would I have want to throw that away?

Well enough of that.  As my trust and faith continues to build this attitude in my heart changes.  And I am so grateful for the Holy Spirit bringing this to the forefront of my mind so we can work on it.  If the Bible tells me I have peace with God, then who am I to argue!  Philippians 1:6   And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.

Lord, You have broken down the barriers between us.  You have brought us peace, and restored our relationship with You.  Thank You.  Help us to not put up any walls between us through sin or unforgiveness or anger or anything.  We have peace with You!  How amazing, how joyful, how awesome!  Oh to stand in Your Presence with nothing between us!  Amen!!!

Remember you have peace with God.

Keep Going

Last week I had some computer issues.  Fortunately it was an easy fix, once I figured it out.  LOL  But that came at the end of the week, so I missed my entries.  Starting anew today and happy to be back doing so!

I came across this Scripture while typing up a reading for a friend who celebrates their birthday today.  I believe when a devotional reading falls on our birthday, it's God's specially designed,, specific to that person, gift for the year ahead.  Even if it doesn't make sense at the time.  He has it placed there at the time for a reason.  With God there are no accidents or coincidences.

I've had some life difficulties lately, lots of things seem to be going wrong at once, and that is part of this journey we take to Heaven.  Thankfully the Lord has been teaching me and carrying me through, (even when it's kicking and screaming).  LOL  I know He has a plan and I continue to trust Him, but some days it's hard to maintain.

So as usual, our loving heavenly Father sends His encouragement and I know that it's meant to be shared with others who are facing their difficult times and circumstances.  We all need that loving touch from Jesus to get us through the day.

2 Corinthians 4:16-18  That is why we never give up.  Though our bodies are dying, our spirits are being renewed every day.  For our present troubles are small and won't last very long.  Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever!  So we don't look at the troubles we can see now; rather we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen.  For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.

Hope and promise.  Our Lord brings us these in abundance when we focus our eyes on Him.  There is so much to look forward to after this life ends for those of us who belong to Jesus.  Making it through some days seems near impossible.  But these days are a blink in the eye of eternity.  And eternal life with God is beyond our imaginations in joy, peace, love and beauty.  And we will get there.  Until then, He holds us in His hands and continues to work in us, through us, and for us.  Trust this.

Lord, You know our days are sometimes difficult.  We struggle, we see loved ones hurting.  But You never leave nor forsake us.  And our destination is Heaven even if we have to go through many trials to get there.  Our struggles are not purposeless, not unending and not a surprise to You.  Thank You for never leaving us hopeless or helpless.  Thank Your for the hope and promise of not just heaven, but of good coming from anything we go through here.  You are awesome!

Live in 2 Corinthians 4:16-18 today.  Keep it with you.

Turning the Perspective

A couple of days ago I was driving along and I hear a preacher talking on the radio.  I can't even tell you  his name or the program, as I only listened for a few minutes...but he said something that at first irritated me, then caused one of those rare, "still, small voice" moments that kind of blew me away.

The gentleman was talking about how faith is built by seeing God's faithfulness in the small things, and learning to trust Him as we see Him working in our lives.  I immediately thought to myself, "well I have a hundred small prayers that haven't been answered, faith is really hard for me when I feel like I'm never seeing answers."   And then  came "the voice."   "Look at other things," it said.

So often I (and I'm sure I'm not alone here) look at all the things we don't get, all the answers we don't receive instead of looking at all the ones we do.

I have a problem with spilling stuff...I spill about twenty times a day (well, maybe not that much LOL).  And I get frustrated with the Lord, saying, "can't You just make me stop making messes!?!"  But I have to say, if I really look at it, then I manage to not spill things much more often than I  actually do spill stuff.  So the issue lies not with the spilling, but with the seeing.

I think back to September 11th.  A horrible, tragic day for so many people, not just  here in the US, but around the world.  So many people were asking "where was God?"  But then the stories started coming out, about incredible rescues, people helping one another, coming together, and amazing "coincidences" that left people safe instead of at work that day.  As horrendous as that day was, if you looked you could find so much goodness as well.

God wants us to look at things from the positive perspective.  Look at what He is doing, where He is working.  And give thanks!!

I love that four small words could change the way I see the world, my life and my Lord.  I am not a naturally positive person, I battle negativity daily.  But I believe this was God's way of taking me one step closer to victory in that battle.  "Look at other things."

Lord, I love that You speak to Your people.  I love that You never give up and continually push us forward.  You are doing so much and I pray that each of us would be more aware of Your work and Presence in our lives and the love that is forever ours.  Change us to see as You see.  In Jesus' merciful Name.  Amen

"Look at other things."

By the way, I've just about made it though my whole cup of  morning coffee without spilling it!  LOL

Courage to Obey, from Mom

Acts 4:5-13   The next day the council of all the rulers and elders and teachers of religious law met in Jerusalem. 6 Annas the high priest was there, along with Caiaphas, John, Alexander, and other relatives of the high priest. 7 They brought in the two disciples and demanded, “By what power, or in whose name, have you done this?”  8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers and elders of our people, 9 are we being questioned today because we’ve done a good deed for a crippled man? Do you want to know how he was healed? 10 Let me clearly state to all of you and to all the people of Israel that he was healed by the powerful name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene,] the man you crucified but whom God raised from the dead. 11 For Jesus is the one referred to in the Scriptures, where it says, ‘The stone that you builders rejected has now become the cornerstone.’  12 There is salvation in no one else! God has given no other name under heaven by which we must be saved.”  13 The members of the council were amazed when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, for they could see that they were ordinary men with no special training in the Scriptures. They also recognized them as men who had been with Jesus.

Courage to obey means facing life's challenges with increasing fearlessness, firmness and calmness in our spirit.

A Blueprint for Life:  Courage, A Strategy for Victory and His Loving Presence

Joshua 1:7-8  Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the instructions Moses gave you. Do not deviate from them, turning either to the right or to the left. Then you will be successful in everything you do. 8 Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do.

We have all three!  The Word of God gives us the strategy and commands for living.  Jesus' life illustrates them for us.   The Holy Spirit lives within us, teaches us God's ways and empowers us.  If we obey, then God will enable us.

From me,

Mom found the key to having courage to obey was being with the Lord.  The Jewish authorities saw that Peter and John had been with Jesus, they were bold and outspoken in sharing the truth of the Gospel.  Joshua was told to be courageous, God would be with Him, stay in the Word, learn it, live it.

The more time we spend in the Lord's Presence, through study, prayer, praise and worship, the more we will know what to do and have the strength to do it.  It can be so hard to stay faithful when the world around us and even our own desires attempt to draw us away.  Much like Satan tempted Eve in Eden, we hear the whispers to walk away from God's plan, His commands.

We want to do it our way, fit in with those around us, have things that can hurt us....but the Spirit calls our hearts to a higher ground.  Obedience it the only true way to freedom.  Remaining in the Presence of our Lord strengthens us, gives us courage and teaches us the way to go.

Lord, teach us to remain with You that we may find the desire and the courage to obey.  Sometimes our flesh is so demanding, so loud....help us to follow the still, small voice.  It takes Holy Spirit courage to live in this world, to go against the flow, to stand out and stand up.  Lord we want to be different, but sometimes being different hurts.  Make the desire to obey stronger than our desire for acceptance.  In Jesus' mighty Name.  Amen

Spend time with the Lord that you may be strengthened for the battle.

Helmet

Ephesians 6:17  Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit which is the word of God.

If our helmet is salvation, we should be thinking as saved people.  That opens so many avenues on thought.  How do saved people think?  How should we think?  What do we think about?  What should we be thinking about?   To me this is like a word picture...In seeing salvation as my helmet it really illuminates the whole "renewing your mind" instruction from Romans 12:2.  "Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect."  It brings it to life for me.

We need only to look into God's Word to discover the answers to how and what we should be thinking.  Knowing things like how much God loves us, who we are in Christ, how we are to relate to God and to those around us, how we are to respond to trials and hardships, all of this relies on our thinking and our thinking needs to be shaped by the Bible.  When we do that, we are thinking as a saved person, wearing our helmet of salvation.  I know sometimes these concepts seem elementary, like, "oh, no kidding...we need to think right,"  but it really goes so much deeper, and seems so much more alive when God gives you a picture.  And sometimes we need to be reminded in a new way that brings these "old" concepts to life.  I know I do.

Psalm 77:12  They are constantly in my thoughts. I cannot stop thinking about your mighty works.

Psalm 119:97  Oh, how I love your instructions! I think about them all day long.

Psalm 119:148  I stay awake through the night, thinking about your promise.

Philippians 4:8  And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.

Romans 8:5  Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit.

I love when I hear just one little phrase and it awakens my whole mind.  It's like an explosion of light going off in my head.  Wow.  What a God visit!    Helmet, thinking, salvation....love it!!!   We have to be wearing our helmets!

Lord, help us to think like the saved people we are.  We are a new creation, the old thought patterns and lost thinking need to go!  Give new life to our minds.  Fill our thoughts with Your Word, Your light and make us new!  Lord, I'm sorry for the negativity, the foul thoughts I let stay in my mind, the things I dwell on that are harmful and cause me to not live the life, be the witness, share the love that You would have me do.  I pray that each of us will remember our helmet and think as You think.  In Jesus Name, amen.

Remember your helmet today.  You are saved!!

It's Easy to Believe

My niece and I took a hike in one of our preserves here on Long Island.  Shelter Island has a beautiful area known as Mashomack Preserve and we spent a couple of hours hiking through it's lovely forests and fields.  As we walked along, we started talking about the Lord and how it's so crazy that anyone could not believe in an intelligent Creator.  The world is too immense, to varied, too inter-dependent.  How could anyone believe such a intricate and interlaced universe could be accidental!

At one point we just stood quietly.  You could hear the sound of the waves falling against the shore, feel the golden sunshine warming our faces and smell the thick woods all around us.  And I just had to give thanks.  To acknowledge the amazing-ness of our Lord.  What a blessing!

Whenever we start to doubt, we need only to look around, look at the sky, the trees, the wonder of our own bodies, our minds and know, there is someone behind it all.  And that someone loves us!  He proved it on the Cross.

Thank You Lord for the beauty around us.  Even in the darkest of places, You make Yourself seen.  Shadows and light are Your creation.  Bricks and concrete, trees and flowers, mountains and oceans...the stars and the clouds, all made by Your hand.  All given for our benefit.  You are an amazing, creative, intelligent God.  There is none like You!  All those attributes are only surpassed by Your love.  What a mighty God You are!  Remind us often of Your greatness and surround us with Your love, especially when we start forgetting.  In Jesus lovely Name.  Amen.

Psalm 19:1-6  The heavens proclaim the glory of God, the skies display His craftmanship!

Make it a point today to see the Lord in what's around you.
